London Overground - Recipe for a Reliable Railway

18 March 2013

Running a reliable railway is the ultimate aim of any train operator. It grows business, satisfies stakeholders and contributes to safety. The London Overground network has consistently been at the top of the national punctuality and performance league tables since the system reached maturity with new rolling stock and the re-opening of the East London line.

David's talk explored how this has been achieved, not only through the engineering of the trains themselves, but also by operational discipline and infrastructure integrity.

Tracing the origins of the present Overground concept, David also discussed how reliability can be maintained into the future, in a context of rising passenger numbers and corresponding efforts to raise capacity with longer trains and infrastructure works.

Presented by David Brignell, Rolling Stock Fleet Manager, London Overground Operations, Transport for London

Since joining London Overground six years ago, David has been designing, building, implementing, operating, extending, maintaining and improving the Class 378 rolling stock at Transport for London's depots in New Cross Gate and the Willesden Train Maintenance Depot. Within the integrated Crossrail team, he is procuring rolling stock, the new Crossrail depot and an operator for Transport for London's forthcoming Crossrail operations.

Before this, David worked for South Eastern trains, where he was the head of fleet engineering at Ramsgate, and British Maritime Technology, where he provided maintenance and technical support consultancy services to the railway industry.
