The challenges to ensure 80% reduction of CO2 by 2050

26 April 2011

This lecture, presented by Dame Sue Ion DBE FIC FCGI FIM FNucl, was held by ICE and the IMechE North West Region on 26 April 2011.

The challenges to ensure safe, secure, affordable energy in the 21st Century appear to be increasing rather than decreasing.

Geopolitical instability, political intransigence and mother nature are all conspiring to make the task more difficult.

The talk will re-examine the situation in the UKwhere until recently neither engineering reality nor social/behavioural challenge have been sufficiently taken into account in setting policy.

It will also reflect on international events such as the ongoing instability in the Middle East and the Tsunami in Japan and their impact on the energy sector.
