Passive Safety Design and Validation of a European Rail Platform

The paper will cover the Normative references for RST Interoperability in the areas of Structural Crashworthiness and Interior Passive Safety. It will include terms and definitions for Structural Crashworthiness and define the Design categories of railway
vehicles and design collision scenarios currently accepted for cross border use and to enable the sale of a platform throughout Europe. Giving an overview of the structural passive safety in terms of the general principles of preventing overriding and derailment and limiting deceleration during a collision event.

For interior passive safety the paper will derive the methods adopted to ensure survival space prevent intrusion and obviate egress. The principles underlying the Validation of Crashworthiness in terms of structures and interiors will also be discussed.

John has worked for Bombardier for 10 years, taking up his current role in 2009.
This role includes liaison with accident investigation authorities on a Global basis, review and address critical contracts in conceptual and final design phase, and producing Bombardier Codes of Practice and Design Guidelines for Interior Passive Safety and Structural Crashworthiness.
