Passengers, Procurement and Product Development – The Supply Chain for a Successful Railway

08 March 2010

This lecture is free and open to all. Refreshments are available from 5.15, the lecture will start at 6pm prompt.

The rail industry supply chain has traditionally only considered rail companies and their suppliers. However, if the industry is to thrive in coming years, which supply chain, must extend right through to the real end customers – passengers, freight shippers and the community at large.  The lecture will thus look at what those customers want, and how equipment suppliers can help train operators deliver it. It will draw on the speaker’s experience at Chiltern Railways, and go on to consider how a customer-led strategy might influence the future of the national DMU fleet.

This years George Ramshaw Curry Lecture will be presented by Adrian Shooter CBE, Chairman Chiltern Railways.

Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineers, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and of the Chartered Institute of Transport, Adrian joined British Rail in 1970 as an Engineering Management Trainee.

In the course of his career, Adrian has had management responsibility for a wide range of railway activities, including operations, engineering and marketing.  Throughout, he has been at the forefront of improving productivity and delivering change, initially as Engineering Manager, then moving progressively into business management and, since 1993, as Managing Director of Chiltern Railways.

In 2002 Adrian became Chairman of Chiltern Railways and Managing Director of Laing Rail which has now become DB Regio UK Limited a wholly owned subsidiary of Deutsche Bahn AG.

Adrian is a Director of London Overground Rail Operations Limited and Wrexham, Shropshire and Marylebone Railway both 50% owned by DB Regio UK Limited and a non-executive director of R.S.S.B (the Industry Safety Company).
