97th Thomas Hawksley Lecture: Powering the Future

14 December 2009

This year’s Thomas Hawksley lecture will be presented by Paul Willson, Deputy Director of Generation for international engineering consultancy, Parsons Brinckerhoff.  Paul is also the principal author of Powering the Future, a detailed and hard-hitting report by Parsons Brinckerhoff which focuses on the impact of meeting the UK Government’s carbon reduction targets for 2050 and highlights critical steps for tackling CO2 reduction.

The report recognises that to protect the well-being of future generations, immediate action is vital to manager carbon dioxide emissions worldwide and minimise the likelihood of climate change.  These issues present a major challenge to the UK and its economy, which already faces less-reliable supplies with many power stations scheduled to retire in the next decade.

Powering the Future is the product of over two years of independent study by a multi-disciplinary team of senior engineers at Parsons Brinckerhoff.  It highlights the critical steps that must be taken across the UK economy and explores what actions will have the maximum effect across the transport, industry, domestic, commercial and electricity generation sectors.

The report uses a comprehensive set of analysis models to evaluate the overall impact of various measures, allowing alternative strategies to be compared and critical actions and measures to be identified.  The report will be published at the end of November 2009 in advance of the Copenhagen summit.
