James Clayton Memorial Lecture 2009: Sustainable Engineering or Engineering Sustainability? – Challenges for Multi-Disciplinary Innovation

19 October 2009

Since the Industrial Revolution, engineering has played a central role in improving quality of life, but until recently its practitioners were largely oblivious of environmental impacts. Recognition of these effects led to improving ‘business as usual’, creating designs and production processes with lower impact. It is now clear that this is not enough, and engineers need to be designing for sustainable outcomes at a global level.

This lecture will explore, using examples from the Built Environment and Consumer sectors, how we have got to where we are and will present some key ideas for sustainability enabled by multi-disciplinary engineering.
