Railway Division Chairman's Address Bridging the Gap - Industry and Academia in Harmony

14 September 2009

The key is to foster a strong, mutual appreciation of each others’ motivations and requirements and to build long-lasting relationships and research partnerships. The first part of the lecture will summarise the speaker’s experience, expertise and achievements from both his initial period in industry and subsequent career in university in order to provide a context for the ideas discussed. This will be followed by a personal view of ingredients for success – an awareness of different types of research; beneficial opportunities for research funding; dos and don’ts for achieving innovation success and effective technology transfer. The address will conclude with aspirations and plans for the year as Chairman.

Roger Goodall worked in British Rail’s Research and Development Division for 12 years involved in a variety of control-related projects connected with the railway industry. In 1982 he took up an academic position at Loughborough University, and is currently Professor of Control Systems Engineering. His research is focussed upon practical applications of advanced control, with a particular emphasis upon railway vehicle technology - tilting trains, active suspension systems , ‘mechatronic’ bogies, etc. In addition to this railway industry involvement, over the last 15 years he has had a succession of funded projects with

BAE systems investigating techniques for providing enhanced performance and design flexibility for aircraft flight control systems.

This Lecture is free and open to all. Refreshments will be served at 17.15 before the lecture with a drinks reception following the lecture in the Marble Hall.
