The Use and Misuse of SIL

14 January 2009

The concept of Safety Integrity Level (SIL) has made an immense contribution to the acceptance of software and electronic systems in safety related applications. The value of the concept has subsequently been undermined by the association with each SIL of a fixed value of probability of failure, without taking account of all the factors which affect the probability of failure. This has caused anomalies in the interpretation of SIL which in turn have led to a misunderstanding and misuse of the concept.
