ERTMS Infrastructure - the Spanish Experience

11 March 2009

In the last 20 years, Spain has modernised its commuter lines in the major cities as well as developed new high-speed lines linking these cities. For its new lines, interoperability with the rest of Europe was considered to be a key requirement, which led to the decision to use the standard European track gauge of 1435 mm instead of the 1668 mm gauge which is normal within Spain. In addition, interoperability of the signalling system for the high-speed lines was considered important.

This presentation describes progress towards meeting those two laudable objectives.
